Come out and support Safe Place for Pets by attending our very first Pottery Class, led by local artisan Betsey Niebuhr.
This 3-hour class will give you hands-on instruction to create a sconce, candle holder or other keepsake. Intended for beginners and intermediate level students, you’ll learn to handle clay, shape it, and texturize it while experiencing the creative process in a whole new medium. You will be able to keep two pieces of your choice and the firing and glazing will be taken care of for you in the colors you choose. Once your art piece is ready for pickup, we will arrange a hand-off to you.
Class will be held on April 6th, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm in the MAC, Manitou Art Center, 513 Manitou Avenue, Manitou Springs, CO. For 37 years this art center has enriched lives through music, theatre, pottery, printmaking, and “other loud, slightly dangerous, and intensely messy events.” Safe Place is honored to have access to this wonderful community of artists and to our own fine artist, Betsey Niebuhr!

ABOUT THE ARTIST— Betsey Niebuhr:
Betsey fell in love with pottery on an island off of Sweden when she was 17. Upon entering her junior year at Skidmore College, she took as many pottery classes as possible under the guidance of Regis Brodie and continued as his apprentice upon graduating. She learned to throw forms on the wheel using porcelain along with the nuances of glazing. A job at a local museum provided opportunities to use her pottery skills in historical reenactments and travel exhibits. After years away from clay (travel, work, marriage, kids…) she found a studio open at the Manitou Art Center in 2019. She’s been making beautiful forms on the wheel experimenting with glazes almost every day, selling them at local markets and sharing her passion with other inspiring artists at the MAC.
