Volunteer

We are a 100% volunteer organization. Without the support of dedicated volunteers in the community, Safe Place would not have been able to help over 500 pets of terminally ill persons since it started in 1995. There are many ways volunteers can help us meet our mission. The link to an online volunteer application is available at the bottom of this page or you can call our main number 719-359-0201.

  • Welcoming visitors to our SP4P Welcome Center
  • Providing a.m. or p.m. care for the cats at our Cattery
  • Volunteering for Events and Fundraisers, pet adoption fairs
  • Social Media team member or Website Management
  • Wellness & Placement Volunteers Including: Pet Assessments, errands for clients, exercising dogs, transporting pets to grooming and veterinarian appointments
  • Foster for incoming pets

Upcoming Safe Place For Pets Orientations for new volunteers are held in January, April, July, and October of every year. Please check the calendar for dates and times.

We have limited space for each class, so call as soon as possible.

Position Title: Facility Manager

Tasks include:
  • Work with the Cattery Coordinator and Store Manager to keep the facility in working order.
  • Regularly check locks, lights, furnace, air conditional, water, garbage, etc. for any maintenance needs.
  • Inventory items in storage shed regularly. Maintain an inventory list in the storage shed and office files.
  • Be available to handle issues at the facility.
  • Communicate with the landlords about issues that they are responsible for.
  • Create and document the facility policies and procedures.
  • Monitor that all facility policies and procedures are followed.
  • Inventory supplies needed for the facility and request supplies when needed. First ask Volunteer Coordinator to send out a plea for items and then purchase if they are not donated in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Request reimbursement for items purchased for the facility by following the Check Request Procedures.
  • Turn all hours worked into Volunteer Assistant. An email will be sent monthly asking for hours.
  • The Facility Manager will maintain the Safe Place for Pets facility and storage shed.
  • This volunteer abides by and actively supports the mission and values of Safe Place for Pets.
  • They will be supervised by the Safe Place for Pets Board.
Requirements:
  • The Facility Manager will need to communicate with the Board, Cattery Coordinator, Store Manager, and the landlords.
  • This volunteer must have access to a computer with Microsoft Office (including Access), e-mail, and a printer.
  • This volunteer must have access to a telephone which will be used to contact Safe Place for Pets volunteers and the landlords.

Position Title: Volunteer Coordinator

Tasks include:
  • Recruit new volunteers for Safe Place for Pets.
  • Maintain records for prospects, current and archived volunteers. Track all volunteer information. Respond to all inquiries through email or phone calls about volunteering.
  • Set up an interview, decide if they will be accepted and work with volunteer to find the best fit in the organization.
  • Maintain volunteer contact and email lists and update regularly in Dropbox.
  • Work with Development and Marketing to coordinate volunteers for events.
  • Respond to each volunteer request and work with requestor on coordination.
  • Provide orientation classes for volunteers and board members.
  • Attend all board meetings and support functions that include volunteers.
  • Assist other managers and coordinators develop trainings for their volunteers.
  • Coach all Safe Place volunteer requestors on how to work with volunteers.
  • Maintain recognition, appreciation and communication for volunteers.
  • Dismiss volunteers that are not working in the best interest of Safe Place for Pets and the mission.
  • Collect and record all volunteer hours monthly. There is currently a Volunteer Assistant doing this.
  • Make sure Volunteer Assistant is supported and has current volunteer information.
  • Provide a Volunteer Report to the board each month.
  • Create and maintain a volunteer budget to be updated at quarterly finance meetings.
  • Turn all hours worked into Volunteer Assistant. An email will be sent monthly asking for hours.
Requirements:

Position Title: Development Coordinator

Tasks include:
  • Direct and implement Safe Place for Pets’ development strategy, with the assistance of numerous other volunteers who have a variety of relevant skill sets.
  • Research grants and oversee grant-writing process.
  • Work with Marketing to address fundraising calls to action and promotion of special events/campaigns in social and mass media.
  • Leverage networking opportunities shamelessly to develop resources & relationships for the organization, including in-kind resources.
  • Lead merchandising campaign, working with Marketing and Facility, to maximize fundraising from merchandising/storefront.
  • Work with Placement to identify and supply needed in-kind resources.
  • Work with Placement to maximize development opportunities during the placement process.
  • Manage SP4P’s contact database, including overseeing the data entry process.
  • Work with Business Representative to maximize development opportunities at community events.
  • Work with the Website Coordinator to leverage the website as a fundraising tool.
  • Work with Feline and Canine Coordinators to schedule available pets for adoption fairs and other events.
  • Coordinate with Marketing, Social Media and Website Coordinators to advertise and promote all events.
  • Provide a Development Report to the board each month.
  • Attend all board meetings and events when possible.
  • Other related duties as needed.
Requirements:
  • Superb time and project management skills, including facilitating multiple colleagues’ timelines towards a common goal.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Strategic thinking skills; ability to attend to detail and see the big picture.
  • Proficient research skills, i.e. grant-writing and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Microsoft Office skills, including regular email usage, are required. Database skills are a plus.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, weekly, monthly, and longer term.
  • Grant-writing skills are a plus. We also have great volunteers to help you with these skills.
  • Ability to lead a fantastic team of volunteers, working via email, monthly meetings, and ad hoc meetings.
  • Previous experience with event planning is beneficial.
  • Passion for helping animals and/or the terminally ill.
